rotte di Castro, a m 467 s.l.m., sorge su una rupe tufacea dei Monti Volsini, sul lato nord occidentale del lago di Bolsena, 48 km a NW dal capoluogo Viterbo. Fu fondato nell'Alto Medioevo dagli abitanti scampati alla distruzione della vicina Civita, alla ricerca di un luogo sicuro e difendibile. Sono presenti sul suo territorio necropoli Etrusche del VII secolo a.C. Paese ad economia agricola, ha affiancato alle coltivazioni tradizionali di vite, ulivo e frumento, la patata, che ha reso famoso il territorio. Le origini di Grotte di Castro risalgono al periodo etrusco, ne sono testimonianza le numerose necropoli disseminate nel suo territorio e la moltitudine di reperti che ancora oggi riappaiono alla luce. Sul colle, denominato Civita, a poche centinaia di metri dall'attuale centro abitato sorgeva, infatti, una fiorente cittadina etrusca cui la tradizione ha imposto il nome di Tiro, nonostante a riguardo vi siano diverse teorie. Si suppone che la città sia stata distrutta durante l'invasione romana del 280 a.C., mentre del periodo successivo sappiamo ben poco. Presumibilmente la vita continuò seguendo i costumi e le leggi imposti da Roma. Durante il primo medioevo, le popolazioni del lago di Bolsena subirono l'invasione dei Barbari che dal nord calavano su Roma. In tale frangente Tiro fu di nuovo distrutta nel VII sec. per opera dei Longobardi. A testimonianza di ciò rimane il nome di una località chiamata “valle muje”, ossia “valle degli urli”, dove sembra sia avvenuto un sanguinoso eccidio.
