Scatto eseguito in appoggio. La chiesa di S. Maurizio al Monastero Maggiore, costruita sui resti di edifici romani e conosciuta anche come Cappella Sistina di Milano, venne realizzata nel 1503 da due importanti architetti del '500, il Dolcebuono e l'Amedeo, attivi anche nel cantiere del Duomo di Milano, in Santa Maria delle Grazie, Santa Maria presso S. Celso e alla Certosa di Pavia. Fin dall'età carolingia, la chiesa ospitava le monache dell'ordine benedettino, destinazione che si rende evidente nell'originale disposizione degli spazi interni. Si tratta infatti di una pianta rettangolare suddivisa a metà da un muro affrescato; una metà aveva uso pubblico ed era frequentata dai normali fedeli, mentre l'altra era accessibile soltanto per le monache che non erano autorizzate a oltrepassare i confini. Oggi il monastero è completamente visitabile e presenta bellissimi affreschi cinquecenteschi, di cui molti della bottega di Bernardino Luini e altri realizzati dal Boltraffio allievo di Leonardo, da Vincenzo Foppa, dai fratelli Campi e da Simone Peterzano, maestro di Caravaggio. Tutto l'insieme, impreziosito da una bella loggia a serliane e da un raro organo di Gian Giacomo Antegnati, è un perfetto e quasi integro esempio della scuola milanese cinquecentesca e tra le chiese di Milano è certamente una di quelle più particolari ed affascinanti.
