Vive nelle aree tropicali e subtropicali dell'America Centrale e del Sudamerica. È un falco di medie-grandi dimensioni, lungo circa 50 cm, con un'apertura alare di 75-91 cm. Inconfondibile per la grande maschera facciale nera, il dorso e le ali marroni scure e le restanti parti bianche. Preda quasi esclusivamente serpenti, anche i più grandi e velenosi come il serpente corallo, il fer-de-lance e i serpenti a sonagli, rimando anche per ore in attesa su un alto posatoio.
