L'icterus prosthemelas è un itteride che vive nelle foreste delle regioni tropicali centroamericane (appartiene quindi alla stessa famiglia delle oropendole). Il maschio qui ripreso è lungo 18-21 cm ed ha testa, petto e dorso neri, remiganti e grandi copritrici nere, piccole copritrici e scapolari gialle, coda nera e ventre, fianchi e sottocoda gialli. Si trova ai margini delle foreste delle pianure, fino agli 800 m. Si nutre di insetti e di frutta e vive per lo più da solo o in coppie, talvolta in piccoli gruppi. Abbastanza comune in Costarica, il suo stato di conservazione è a rischio minimo. Giugno 2019, Laguna del Lagarto, Alajuela, Costarica.
