La costruzione della Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore nel comune di Ispica (RG), fu iniziata immediatamente dopo il terribile terremoto del 1693 che sconvolse la Sicilia. Ultimata nel 1725, fu danneggiata ancora nel 1727 da un nuovo sisma. I lavori ripresero e durarono circa trent'anni. Furono via via completati gli interni ed abbelliti gli esterni. Nel 1749 Vincenzo Sinatra completò il loggiato che oggi prende il suo nome. In forma semiellittica, in stile rococò, su ispirazione del colonnato del Bernini in San Pietro, chiude la piazza di fronte alla facciata della Basilica. All'interno della Basilica: pitture ed affreschi importanti che hanno valso nel 1908 il riconoscimento di monumento nazionale. Una bozza del quadro centrale di Olivo Sozzi, raffigurante il nuovo ed il vecchio testamento è conservata al Louvre di Parigi. L'area compresa tra la Basilica ed il loggiato, crea una piazza particolarmente folkloristica, non a caso scelta per girare diverse scene: delle celebri fiction Il “Commissario Montalbano”; di “La mossa del cavallo” e “La concessione del telefono” (tratti dagli omonimi romanzi di Andrea Camilleri); del lungometraggio “Perdutoamor” di Franco Battiato. Inoltre la meravigliosa Sophia Loren recitò la parte di Adriana, nella novella di Luigi Pirandello, “Il viaggio” con la regia di Vittorio De Sica. -------------Tutte le foto contenute in queste gallerie sono copyright Sergio Bartolomeo e non possono essere utilizzate in alcuna forma senza il consenso dell'autore.
