L'Isolotto di San Paolo, distante poche decine di metri dalla costa sud di Polignano a mare, è meglio conosciuto come Scoglio dell'Eremita, nome attribuitogli, a dire di molti, a causa di una leggenda che narra di un uomo stabilitosi li per vivere isolato dal resto del mondo. Sull'isola si notano i resti di una cappella dedicata a Sant'Antonio Abate, che nel 1837 furono usate come lazzaretto per far fronte all'epidemia di colera, i resti di un pozzo per la raccolta di acqua piovana ed una croce in ferro, posta in onore di San Vito Martire, Santo Patrono di Polignano a Mare, da alcuni frati missionari nell'anno 1901. Il sito dal punto di vista subacqueo ha tanto da offrire, a partire dalle belle pareti scoscese alternate a grandi massi, che girano tutto intorno all'isola, donando agli occhi del subacqueo un incessante susseguirsi di forme e colori, dando la possibilità di ammirare: gorgonia gialla (Eunicella Cavolini), margherita di mare (Parazoanthus axinellae), cerianto (Cerianthus membranaceus), spirografi (Sabella spallanzani), castagnole (Chromis chromis), tordo ocellato (Symphodus ocellatus), donzelle (Coris julis), donzella pavonina (Thalassoma pavo), scorfanotto (Scorpanea notata), in rari casi la cernia bruna (Epinephelus guaza) e diverse tipologie di nudibranchi tra le quali la bellissima flabellina. Con profondità che variano tra i 5 e i 35 m e la possibilità di effettuare diverse tipologie di immersioni, lo Scoglio dell'Eremita si pone tra le mete sub più ambite della provincia di Bari. Date le particolarità della costa polignanese, l'isolotto è raggiungibile agevolmente solo tramite imbarcazione.
