Cividale del Friuli è una cittadina molto rinomata in Friuli per il suo passato longobardo e le sue bellezze architettoniche. Il Monastero di Santa Maria in Valle nasce a metà del VII secolo d.C. riservato alle Suore Benedettine, successivamente ha subito molte aggiunte e restauri dovuti ad invasioni e terremoti che lo hanno danneggiato anche in maniera grave. L'odierna fisionomia si inizia ad avere nel 1511 circa, mentre nel 1841, l'edificio venne affidato alle Suore Orsoline che vi hanno vissuto fino al 1999. Adesso è di proprietà del Comune.
