In Contrada Grande si trova il Duomo della città, la cui costruzione fu iniziata dai Battuti nel 1345. Questi erano i membri di una congregazione che aveva avuto origine verso il 1260 in Umbria e che già pochi anni dopo era presente a Conegliano, distinguendosi per la cura della spiritualità degli abitanti oltre che per l'assistenza materiale prestata attraverso ospedali ed ospizi da loro fondati. Inizialmente furono ospitati dai monaci pomposiani di S. Maria di Monte, situati lungo la strada che porta in castello nell'area oggi occupata da villa Chisini, ma entro il 1354 costruirono la loro chiesa intitolata a S. Maria Nuova dei Battuti, sorta al centro di un ospizio per pellegrini da loro gestito. L'interno della Sala dei Battuti, di impianto rettangolare, presenta un bel soffitto ligneo e un ciclo di affreschi realizzato per la maggior parte da Francesco da Milano in due momenti distinti. La parete esterna fu infatti dipinta verso il secondo decennio del XVI secolo, mentre quella interna attorno al 1530, con uno stile del tutto differente rispetto a quello delle scene precedenti perché realizzate sul modello delle stampe dei cicli della Piccola e della Grande Passione che il Dürer diede alle stampe attorno al 1510. In seguito la Sala fu ampliata e si dovette procedere alla decorazione delle nuove pareti con episodi realizzati dal Pozzoserrato e da altri artisti locali. Anche se indubbie sono le differenze stilistiche e qualitative tra i riquadri, la Sala costituisce uno dei più interessanti monumenti cittadini. Il ciclo pittorico descrive episodi che vanno dalla creazione del Mondo al Giudizio Universale; cominciando dalla parete interna alla destra della porta di ingresso e procedendo in senso orario si possono ammirare le seguenti scene: Creazione del Mondo; Creazione di Eva; Peccato originale e cacciata dal Paradiso terrestre; Annunciazione, Visitazione; Adorazione dei pastori; Pastori; Presentazione al Tempio; Adorazione dei Magi; Strage degli Innocenti; Fuga in Egitto; Nozze di Cana; Moltiplicazione dei pani e dei pesci; Resurrezione di Lazzaro e l'ingresso a Gerusalemme; Ultima cena; Cattura di Cristo; Salita al Calvario; Crocifissione; Discesa di Gesù al Limbo; Resurrezione; Pie donne al Sepolcro; La Veronica tra i SS. Pietro e Paolo; Gesù appare alla Vergine; Noli me tangere; Cena di Emmaus; Ascensione di Gesù; Giudizio Universale. Di questi riquadri, i tre che presentano dimensioni ridotte rispetto agli altri erano collocati sopra gli stalli dei rettori della Scuola. Dopo le soppressioni napoleoniche, la Sala fu trasformata inizialmente in carcere (1807), poi in ricovero dei soldati (1847) e quindi fu lasciata in stato di abbandono fino agli anni Sessanta, quando è stata restaurata.
