Er Fontanone del Gianicolo, ovvero la magnifica mostra dell'Acqua Paola, è uno dei monumenti più amati dai Romani . Opera dell'architetto Giovanni Fontana, fu costruita tra il 1608 ed il 1610. Occorre però procedere per gradi, e approfondire prima di tutto l'importanza dell'acquedotto che dà alimento alla fontana. La parte destra del Tevere (quella che oggi riconosciamo in Trastevere, Monteverde, ma anche Prati e Borgo Pio), ha subito la carenza di acqua potabile fin dai tempi antichi. Diamo solo pochi dati per capire meglio: su 9 dei grandi acquedotti costruiti dai Romani, solo uno partiva dalla riva destra del Tevere, ovvero quello fatto costruire da Traiano nel 109 d.C. Prima, questa parte di città era rifornita in parte dall'acquedotto Alsietino, la cui acqua era per lo più insalubre e serviva per rifornire i giochi d'acqua voluti dall'Imperatore Augusto. Considerando che Roma nei primi decenni dell'Impero contava oltre un milione di abitanti, era un problema notevole lasciare migliaia di abitanti senza acqua potabile. Nel 537 poi, durante il loro assedio, i Goti tagliarono tutti gli acquedotti che fornivano la capitale dell'Impero, inaugurando di fatto il lungo Medioevo di Roma. La città rimase per secoli senza acqua corrente, finchè nel XV secolo si cominciarono i lavori di ripristino e di ampliamento dei vecchi acquedotti. Guarda caso, la parte destra del Tevere rimase tra le ultime ad essere rifornite, in quanto all'epoca era considerata l'estrema periferia di Roma (quella che oggi è Trastevere!!!). Fu solo all'inizio del XVII secolo che si mise mano all'Acquedotto Traiano per ampliarlo. L'opera fu voluta nel 1605 da Papa Paolo V, il quale comprò dalla famiglia Orsini numerosi sorgenti d'acqua nella zona compresa tra il Lago di Bracciano e Trevignano. Già nel 1608 l'acquedotto (da allora detto “paolo”) era in funzione. Mancava solo da costruire la sua “mostra”, ovvero una splendida fontana che potesse rendere onore a uno sforzo tanto grande. L'incarico fu affidato a Giovanni Fontana e il luogo scelto è tuttora uno dei più caratteristici di Roma: al Gianicolo, precisamente San Pietro in Montorio. Cinque nicchie sorreggono una grande trabeazione con sopra un'iscrizione a testimonianza della realizzazione dell'opera. Tuttavia, l'iscrizione riporta un errore storico: si cita l'acquedotto alsietino, mentre in realtà l'acquedotto Paolo parte da quello traianeo. Fateci caso se passate lì davanti! La grande nicchia centrale è vuota e doveva permettere la visione dell'orto botanico presente dietro. Ma a rendere unica la fontana è la scenografia: l'enorme vasca (peraltro aggiunta solo alla fine del Seicento), di notte rispecchia la luna e crea una cornice unica per chi si affaccia dal belvedere. Un posto magico che ha ispirato cantanti, poeti e registi (ad esempio, di recente, chi può dimenticare le inquadrature fatte da Sorrentino nel film La Grande Bellezza?). Da Tommasetti.
