La Basilica di San Vitale a Ravenna è la testimonianza visibile del potere dei Bizantini nell'Occidente. Come modello venne presa la chiesa dei Santi Sergio e Bacco a Costantinopoli. La costruzione della basilica fu iniziata al tempo dell'arcivescovo Ecclesio nel 525, l'anno prima della morte del re Teodorico e fu continuata col denaro di Giuliano Argentario, banchiere molto benestante, che sosteneva la politica bizantina in Italia.
