Prato della Valle, uno dei simboli di Padova, è una grande piazza ellittica che, oltre ad essere la maggiore piazza padovana, è una delle più grandi d'Europa. La piazza è in realtà un grande spazio monumentale caratterizzato da un'isola verde centrale, chiamata Isola Memmia, in onore del podestà che commissionò i lavori, circondata da un canale ornato da un doppio basamento di statue numerate di celebri personaggi del passato che secondo il progetto originario dovevano essere 88 (oggi possiamo osservare, invece, solo 78 statue con 8 piedistalli sormontati da obelischi e 2 vuoti). Quattro viali attraversano il Prato su piccoli ponti, per poi incontrarsi al centro dell'isolotto. La sistemazione trae ispirazione dalla grande tradizione veneta del giardino patrizio; qui per la prima volta questo venne distolto dall'uso privato e proposto, secondo i concetti neoclassici, come soluzione urbanistica e qualificazione ambientale.
