La famiglia dei Tipulidi appartenenti all'ordine dei Ditteri sono chiamati anche tipule o zanzaroni degli orti, insetti fragili conosciuti perchè le zampe si staccano se catturati. La femmina depone le uova nel terreno, dove successivamente avrà luogo lo sviluppo larvale. Le larve si nutrono di piccole radici e si impupano sotto terra.
