La Cattedrale di Smolnyj si trova ai limiti del centro cittadino. La caratteristica architettonica di questa cattedrale è di non possedere una facciata anteriore perché tutte le pareti dell'edificio hanno lo stesso stile elegante da tutti i lati, anche quelle che guardano verso i quartieri moderni sull'altra riva della Neva. Il colore è stato studiato in modo da accordarsi con quello del cielo cittadino e passa dall'azzurro intenso delle giornate piene di sole al grigio delle giornate più uggiose. Tutto dipende dal clima sempre mutevole di Pietroburgo. la cattedrale di Smolnyj, uno dei simboli della città degli zar, poi di proprietà dello Stato, viene restituita alla Chiesa il 14 aprile 2015 grazie all'applicazione progressiva della legge 2010 che prevede la restituzione dei luoghi di culto e delle proprietà religiose già nazionalizzati dallo Stato. Progettata, come il Giardino d'Inverno, dall'architetto italiano Bartolomeo Rastrelli nel 1746 (ma terminata nel 1835 dal russo Vasily Stasov), la cattedrale di Smolnyj, dedicata alla Risurrezione di Cristo, venne confiscata dai bolscevichi nel 1922 che la trasformarono in un magazzino di derrate per poi chiuderla nel 1931. L'antico edificio, costruito sulle rive della Neva e dichiarato dall'Unesco Patrimonio dell'umanità, fu adibito, a partire dal 1990, a sala di concerti da camera e mostre temporanee per poi venire riaperto al culto, dopo una serie di restauri, dal 2010, 175° anniversario della consacrazione, per poi ritornare di proprietà della Chiesa ortodossa. Nel frattempo sono state ricollocate tutte le opere d'arte conservate presso il «Museo di stato». L'edificio, a croce greca, fa parte di un complesso architettonico barocco con delicate tonalità bianco-azzurre, in cui rientra anche un monastero voluto dalla zarina Elisaveta Petrovna nel 1730 come sede per trascorrere gli ultimi anni della sua vita nell'area che era stata l'abitazione della sua famiglia nella sua infanzia (era la figlia di Pietro il Grande). Il chiostro avrebbe dovuto accogliere ragazze orfane e figlie della nobiltà russa dell'epoca. (nell'istituto di formazione attiguo, da cui nel 1917 partì la «Rivoluzione russa» di Lenin e Trockij, nel XIX secolo seguì gli studi anche Elena di Montenegro futura sposa di Vittorio Emanuele III di Savoia). Il nome del complesso sulle rive del fiume Neva, il terzo fiume europeo che attraversa la città, deriva dalla parola russa «smola» che significa pece/catrame dal momento che il quartiere era la zona della città dove aveva sede il cantiere navale.
