Cari amici ed amiche, credo che ognuno di noi nella città dove è nato o dove vive, abbia quelli che io chiamo: “i luoghi del cuore”, ebbene se dovessi dire i miei, non esiterei: la Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II e via Manzoni, la più elegante di Milano. Forse non tutti sanno che prima di essere dedicata al grande Manzoni (nel 1874, dopo la sua morte), si chiamava Corsia del Giardino. Tutte le volte che torno in questa via, oggi chiamata “quadrilatero della moda”, (perché nel suo tracciato, tra via Montenapoleone e l'antica Porta Nuova, s'innestano quattro vie: Manzoni, Montenapoleone, della Spiga e corso Venezia), ammirando gli storici e prestigiosi palazzi, mi tornano in mente immagini, scenari, echi di un passato ormai perduto. Mi sembra di rivedere belle signore con pelliccia e gioielli che scendono da sontuose carrozze, per prendere il braccio dei loro cavalieri. Immagino Carlo Alberto la sera del 4 agosto 1848, quando reduce dalla sconfitta di Custoza, si affacciò al balcone di palazzo Brentani Greppi,(al civico 6, oggi sede della Banca Commerciale) nel tentativo di calmare la folla sottostante e sfuggire per un pelo a un attentato. Il 5 agosto, dopo una notte d'inferno passata in un letto da campo nel salone del piano nobile, il sovrano piemontese doveva lasciare la città a piedi con le sue truppe sconfitte, seguito dai patrioti milanesi in fuga… E, sempre a ritroso nel tempo, mi sembra di rivedere la notte del 1859 entrare a Palazzo Anguissola, Antona Traversi, al fianco del generale Garibaldi per incontrare l'indomani mattina re Vittorio Emanuele II… Ma quelli che mi accompagnano sempre e mi fanno tornare sempre con piacere in questa via, sono i miei ricordi di un nostalgico passato professionale, e si fermano al Grand Hotel et de Milan, il più antico albergo di lusso della città, dove ho passato pomeriggi e serate ad incontrare una folla di personaggi famosi. Ancora oggi, quando ci torno per bere un caffè o gustare un apertitivo con la proprietaria Daniela Bertazzoni che, da tanti anni mi onora della sua amicizia, mi sembra di rivedere nel suo angolo preferito, Paolo Stoppa con la sua Lia Morelli, Aroldo Tieri e Giuliana Loiodice, Dorelli, Pippo Baudo, il mitico Luciano Pavarotti…e mi fermo qui, perché l'elenco sarebbe troppo lungo. Spesso torno alla Feltrinelli, dove ho avuto la fortuna di parlare più volte con quella donna straordinaria che fu la Inge Feltrinelli (da poco scomparsa), risento i sapori del Don Lisander, un famoso e storico ristorante che ha sede in quella che fu la cappella di casa Trivulzio. Ancora oggi, salgo ogni tanto nella suite 105 dell'hotel, dove morì a 87 anni il 27 gennaio del 1901 il grande Verdi. Se mi affaccio al balconcino è come rivedessi, la via cosparsa di paglia, perché venisse attutito il rumore delle carrozze, per non disturbare il riposo dei suoi ultimi giorni. E chiudo questa galleria dei ricordi, con qualche cenno storico su Porta Nuova,che divide via Manzoni da piazza Cavour (più antica rispetto a Porta Nuova di piazza Principessa Clotilde), delimita scenograficamente via Manzoni con i suoi archi gemelli faceva parte della primitiva cinta muraria medievale, dove passava anche la cerchia dei Navigli e che fu riedificata nel 1171, dopo l'assedio di Federico Barbarossa e restaurata dopo centocinquant'anni da Azzone Visconti, che fece anche inserire sopra gli archi, il tabernacolo della Madonna con il Bambino e i Santi.
