Il porto fluviale di Roma: l'emporium - A partire dal II secolo a.C. l'area di Testaccio ai piedi dell'Aventino fu scelta per la costruzione di un nuovo porto fluviale sul Tevere. Il nuovo attracco era costituto da un'area recintata e lastricata, con ormeggi per le barche. Per gestire le variazioni di livello dovute alle piene del fiume, lo scalo venne nel tempo ingrandito e strutturato con banchine pavimentate a grandi lastre di travertino, con pietre forate per l'ormeggio e usate come piazzale di scarico nei periodi di piena. Nel I sec. d.C. alle spalle venne realizzato un edificio su tre piani costituito da una doppia serie di grandi ambienti ricoperti a volta e allineati secondo l'asse del fiume, illuminati da lucernari verso il Tevere e da larghe porte carraie sul lato opposto. L'edificio venne in seguito ampliato con una nuova struttura formata da una serie di camere chiuse da un grande muraglione inclinato e altri ambienti interni illuminati dai lucernari.
