La basilica di S.Pietro in Vincoli deve il suo nome alle catene (dal latino vincula, catene) qui conservate e che, secondo la tradizione, furono utilizzate per legare S.Pietro durante la sua prigionia a Gerusalemme e nel Carcere Mamertino. Nel V secolo d.C. l'imperatrice Elia Eudocia, moglie dell'imperatore d'Oriente Teodosio II, ebbe in dono dal Patriarca di Gerusalemme, Giovenale, le catene con le quali, secondo il racconto degli Atti degli Apostoli, S.Pietro era stato imprigionato a Gerusalemme. L'imperatrice inviò le catene alla figlia, Licinia Eudossia, moglie dell'imperatore d'Occidente Valentiniano III, la quale volle donarle personalmente a papa Leone I, detto anche Leone Magno. La Chiesa era già in possesso delle catene utilizzate per la prigionia di S.Pietro nel Carcere Mamertino, cosicché, quando il pontefice accostò le due catene, queste si fusero miracolosamente per divenirne una soltanto. A ricordo e celebrazione perpetua del miracolo, nel 442 d.C. fu edificata la basilica di S.Pietro in Vincoli, anche grazie all'aiuto dell'imperatrice Licinia Eudossia (per cui la chiesa è conosciuta anche come Basilica Eudossiana) e qui furono custodite le catene, tuttora visibili sotto l'altare maggiore.
