7 ottobre 1571 LA BATTAGLIA DI LEPANTO La battaglia di Lepanto , fu uno scontro navale avvenuto il 7 ottobre 1571, si fronteggiarono due grandi flotte (Lega Santa e Turchi) composte da centinaia di navi. La Lega Santa si presentò con una flotta solida e numerosa. I Veneziani, infatti, avevano investito in tecnologia, innovando il proprio parco di armi da fuoco ma, soprattutto, avevano lavorato alla costruzione di una vera arma segreta: la galeazza, una galea più alta e più lunga di quelle normali e, per questo, praticamente inabbordabile. Su di essa erano sistemati i tradizionali cannoni laterali, ma anche altri quattro cannoni, due a poppa e due a prua, che le permettevano di sparare da qualsiasi posizione. La battaglia di Lepanto si risolse in una grande disfatta dei turchi, che misero in salvo appena trenta galee e persero circa 35.000 uomini tra morti, feriti e prigionieri. I cristiani liberarono inoltre 15.000 forzati imbarcati come rematori nelle stive turche. Nella memorabile battaglia di Lepanto, fu preziosa non solo la superiorità cattolica dell'artiglieria e nelle armi da fuoco leggere ma il fatto che la flotta musulmana arrivò allo scontro in cattive condizioni, dopo mesi di estenuanti scorribande nell'Adriatico. La notizia della vittoria della Lega Santa nella battaglia di Lepanto suscitò un'ondata di entusiasmo nei Paesi vincitori e in tutte le terre che confinavano con la potenza turca. Quando la notizia della vittoria giunse in Vaticano, il Papa San Pio V, ordinò che tutte le campane di Roma suonassero a festa. Per il mondo cristiano la battaglia di Lepanto segnò la fine di un incubo, perché mostrò che i turchi potevano essere duramente sconfitti in un grande scontro frontale. Dunque al contrario di quanto viene oggi asserito, la difesa delle proprie frontiere serve a qualcosa. Senza la battaglia di Lepanto e senza la battaglia e la resistenza di Vienna nel 1683, l'Europa sarebbe caduta nelle mani dell'impero Ottomano. Lascio a voi immaginare quali conseguenze questo avrebbe causato alla nostra civiltà.
