La giornata comincia presto e l'obiettivo è certo, quello che invece non è dato per scontato è l'avvistamento di ciò che si cerca. Per raggiungere il luogo prescelto per la ricerca ci vogliono alcune ore e man mano che ci si avvicina cresce la sensazione di aver proprio scelto la giornata peggiore perché salendo in altura la cappa di nubi che ci opprime costantemente, si fa sempre più minacciosa fino ad ingoiarci in un velo bianco che non lascia trasparire nulla oltre pochi metri di distanza. Giunti a quasi 2.600 m. la temperatura esterna è a zero e la voglia di abbandonare il tepore dell'auto è poca, ma ci si fa coraggio e e si parte. La salita per raggiungere la meta è faticosa, ma poi facendoci un esame di coscienza ci rendiamo conto che forse siamo noi che abbiamo una preparazione fisica non proprio al top della forma. Si arriva a 2.800 m con la nebbia che in uno slancio di pietà nei nostri confronti decide di dileguarsi improvvisamente lasciando spazio ad un irresistibile mix fatto di cime, pascoli, ghiacciai e laghetti: si tira il fiato e si comincia la ricerca. Le notevoli capacità di mimetismo della "preda" sono cosa nota, così come l'istinto di rimanere immobile anche rispetto a passaggi molto ravvicinati. Si percorrono i pascoli in lungo ed in largo, spuntano gracchi corallini, culbianchi, allodole, spioncelli, camosci e fanelli, ma di lui nessuna notizia.Il tempo passa e dopo vane peregrinazioni nelle malghe in altura, le nostre speranze di un incontro ravvicinato sono drasticamente in declino, facendo presagire una giornata che si potrà definire ottima ma senza "ciliegina sulla torta". Ma ecco che poi in un impeto di orgoglio, in una zona tralasciata perché erroneamente ritenuta troppo accessibile e di notevole passaggio si materializza l'inconfondibile sagoma di un piviere tortolino. Un urlo, in silenzio, per non spaventarlo, la stanchezza accumulata che si volatilizza come per miracolo in un battito di ciglia e parte una serie di raffiche, fortunatamente solo fotografiche, che lo immortalano in tutte le pose dando quasi la sensazione che, conscio di tanta attenzione, si diverta a girarsi da una parte all'altra per dare il meglio della propria fotoigienicità. Davanti a tanta bellezza naturale si può perdere la cognizione del tempo che passa, ma per fortuna non ci dimentichiamo che lui si sta riposando e rifocillando in attesa di intraprendere un ancora lungo viaggio che lo porterà nei quartieri di svernamento: buona fortuna piccolo grande piviere tortolino, vola lontano.......ci vediamo l' anno prossimo, allo stesso posto e scusaci per aver violato la tua pace. Si rientra a casa con la consapevolezza di aver passato una indimenticabile giornata, mentre la nebbia, che si era stabilizzata a quota più bassa, ci inghiotte nuovamente.
