L'area dove oggi sorge la Chiesa di Trinità dei Monti, era quella occupata dalla villa di Lucullo. La chiesa, che anticamente era detta "Trinità del Monte" (in riferimento al Pincio), fu iniziata nel 1502 per volere di Luigi XII, re di Francia per concederla ai religiosi di nazionalità francese dell'Ordine di S.Francesco da Paola. I lavori si protrassero per tutto il XVI secolo, con una sosta di ben 60 anni, dal 1527 al 1587, a causa dei gravi danni,causati dal Sacco di Roma. Gli autori della fabbrica, tradizionalmente attribuita a Giacomo Della Porta, furono gli architetti Annibale Lippi e Gregorio Canonica. La chiesa, consacrata nel 1585 da Sisto V, fu costruita in stile gotico con pietre provenienti da Narbonne, per espresso volere di re Luigi XII. Tra il 1585 ed il 1586 papa Sisto V incaricò Domenico Fontana di aprire una strada che collegasse il Pincio con la basilica di S.Maria Maggiore, che dal nome di battesimo del pontefice stesso, ossia Felice Peretti, fu denominata "strada Felice", oggi frazionata in via Sistina, via delle Quattro Fontane, via Agostino Depretis, via Carlo Alberto, via Conte Verde e via di S.Croce in Gerusalemme. Al termine dei lavori, però, il piano stradale era divenuto decisamente inferiore rispetto all'ingresso del convento e della chiesa e, per ovviare al problema, l'architetto costruì la scalinata a due rampe convergenti che conduce alla chiesa: i pilastri hanno lo stemma della famiglia Peretti, i tre monti, e, sopra a due bellissimi capitelli risalenti al XVII secolo, due erme. Dinanzi alla chiesa è collocato l'obelisco Sallustiano, portato a Roma da Aureliano e fatto collocare all'interno degli "Horti Sallustiani" L'obelisco, alto 13,91 metri, di granito rosso, è egizio-romano perché fu inciso anticamente a Roma con iscrizioni mal ricopiate dal monolite di piazza del Popolo con bassorilievi raffiguranti S.Luigi. Da segnalare che questo obelisco è l'unico ad affiancare alla croce un simbolo diverso da quello pontificio: infatti vi si può osservare il giglio di Francia.
