Pieris bryoniae, (Hübner, [1806]) - Famiglia Pieridae - Sottofamiglia Pierinae - Apertura alare: Da 3,8 a 4,5 cm. - Distribuzione in Italia: Presente su Alpi e Prealpi. - Habitat: Prati, ampie radure e margine dei boschi di norma da 1200 a oltre 2000 m., ma in alcune vallate prealpine vi sono razze locali anche a partire da 500 m. ed in Friuli si rinvengono popolazioni in pianura. - Periodo di volo: Di norma è univoltina con sfarfallamenti in giugno-luglio, ma a bassa quota può essere polivoltina con una seconda generazione che sfarfalla da metà agosto. - Pianta alimentare dei bruchi: Biscutella laevigata, Thlaspi montanum e altre crucifere tra cui quelle del genere Cardamine. - Dimorfismo sessuale: Femmina con due macchie nere nella zona mediana dell'ala anteriore e, quasi sempre, con una vistosa velatura scura su fondo giallo, sul diritto di tutte le ali. - Variazioni: A bassa quota i maschi della seconda generazione presentano disegni grigi più chiari e ridotti che li rendono simili a Pieris napi, le femmine risultano gialle e possono perdere quasi completamente la velatura scura. In alcuni maschi può mancare la macchia nera al centro del diritto delle ali. - Specie simili: Pieris napi che presenta femmine senza la colorazione gialla e la velatura scura. I maschi di Pieris napi che volano sopra i 1400 sono spesso non distinguibili.
