Lasiommata megera È una delle specie più comuni e diffuse in tutta Europa e nella isole mediterranee. Nell'Arcipelago Toscano è segnalata quasi ovunque a eccezione di Giannutri e di Capraia. In quest'ultima però è presente una specie gemella endemica del complesso Sardo-Corso: Pararge paramegaera. P megera se ne distingue per la presenza di aree scure vicino agli ocelli delle ali posteriori e per i disegni poco marcati delle pagine inferiori delle ali posteriori. La larva si nutre di molte piante erbacee. Il maschio (in foto) si distingue dalla femmina per la presenza di due macchie scure sulle ali anteriori formate da scaglie specializzate per produrre feromoni. Le farfalle possono essere viste volare in quasi tutti i mesi dell'anno grazie alla sovrapposizione di più generazioni.
