Polyommatus icarus Nome comune: Argo azzurro Grazie alle sue grandi capacità dispersive e all'adattamento ad ambienti molto diversi, l'Icaro è una delle specie più comuni che colonizzano l'area mediterranea, dalle rive del mare alle montagne. L'Arcipelago Toscano non fa eccezione e questa specie è presente all'Elba, Giglio, Pianosa e Capraia. Il maschio (a sinistra) ha le ali sgargianti azzurro elettrico, mentre la femmina (a destra) mostra una livrea molto meno appariscente. La femmina può essere confusa con Aricia agestis. I bruchi si alimentano di molte piante tra cui l'erba medica e il trifoglio. Presenta un caso interessante di mirmecofilia facoltativa; la larva infatti è generalmente difesa dalle formiche sulla sua pianta ospite, ma può anche essere raccolta e allevata all'interno del formicaio prima dello sfarfallamento. Vola dall'inizio della primavera fino all'autunno in due o tre generazioni. Molto comune lungo il santuario, preferisce soprattutto le piccole aree aperte al confine tra la pineta e i pratelli
