Chiamato cigno nero per la colorazione del suo piumaggio, è un uccello imponente. Ha dimensioni analoghe a quelle di un cigno reale. Ha caratteristico becco rosso brillante, attraversato da una linea bianca, ed occhio arancione. Le remiganti sono bianche. E' originario dell'Australia e della Nuova Zelanda e vive prevalentemente in ambienti acquatici, ricchi di vegetazione. Migra spesso per sfuggire ai periodi di siccità. E' stato introdotto in Indonesia e in Spagna. E' onnivoro (mangia insetti, larve, crostacei, pesciolini..) e si nutre prevalentemente di vegetali. Nidifica in consistenti colonie e le coppie formate rimangono fisse per sempre. Fa il nido nascosto nella vegetazione, in prossimità dell'acqua. Per costruire il nido la femmina usa paglia ed erbe secche e piume che si strappa dal ventre. Depone 5-6 uova, che si schiudono dopo 35-48 giorni. In Australia è stato a lungo perseguitato dagli aborigeni che lo consideravano un alleato del diavolo.
