Cistaceae Descrizione: Nano-fanerofita arbustiva sempreverde, alta 30-60 cm, non vischiosa, con odore erbaceo; fusti ramificati, lignificati alla base, tomentosi per abbondanti peli stellati e fascicolati. Foglie opposte, brevemente picciolate (2-4 mm), rugoso-reticolate a nervatura pennata, verde-grigie con abbondanti peli stellati soprattutto sulla pagina inferiore; lamina ovale o ellittica (8-15 x 15-30 mm), spesso arrotondata all'apice e con margine intero, non revoluta. Fiori (4-5 cm di Ø) ermafroditi solitari o talvolta appaiati, penduli prima dell'antesi, disposti su lunghi peduncoli (3-10 cm) monolaterali all'ascella delle foglie. Calice persistente con 5 sepali ovali-cuoriformi, pubescenti, i 3 esterni più grandi dei 2 interni. Corolla dialisepala, presto caduca, con 5 petali bianco candidi di 1,5-2 cm ad unghia gialla, lisci e largamente obovati, un po' smarginati all'apice. Androceo con numerosi stami a filamenti ed antere giallo-arancioni. Stilo corto o subnullo. Ovario supero. Il frutto è una capsula pubescente, bruno-nerastra, globoso-pentagona, troncata all'apice, deiscente per 5 valve e contenente numerosi piccoli semi globosi, bruni. Impollinazione: entomogama Antesi: aprile÷maggio Distribuzione in Italia: Presente in quasi tutto il territorio. Specie di cisto più ampiamente diffusa in Italia, raggiungendo anche il nord dove comunque è generalmente localizzato e sporadico, ma abbondante sui substrati vulcanici nei Colli Euganei. Comune nelle zone costiere e interne collinari centro-meridionali. Habitat: Macchia mediterranea, garighe, al limite dei boschi in posizioni assolate su substrato siliceo nella fascia del leccio, spesso consociato con Cistus creticus L., da 0 a 1200 m s.l.m.
