La datazione è un problema, perché gli aborigeni continuavano a dipingere negli stessi luoghi anche sopra quelle più vecchie. Una stima è possibile basandosi sulla tecnica adoperata. Ad esempio ci sono quelle cosiddette a raggi x e quelle in cui, disegnando l'animale, venivano inseriti anche gli organi interni. Diciamo che le pitture che si ammirano vanno da 20000 anni fa fino quasi ai giorni nostri, diciamo fino ai primi decenni del novecento.
