La moschea e la madrasa del Sultano Hassan sono considerate i due gioielli dell'antica architettura mamelucca, in un momento di grande splendore nella storia dell'architettura. La realizzazione di questo complesso fu un processo particolarmente travagliato. Infatti, la sua realizzazione fra il 1356 e il 1363 registrò momenti tragici: la morte di circa 300 operai per la caduta di alcuni massi e la morte dello stesso Sultano Hassan, ucciso poco prima del termine dei lavori. La moschea-madrasa di Sultan Hassan è stata costruita utilizzando enormi blocchi di pietra. A causa delle sue impressionanti dimensioni, la moschea è diventata simbolo della supremazia architettonica sviluppatasi durante il secolo di reggenza mamelucca.
