Il Monastero Esarchico di Santa Maria di Grottaferrata, detto anche Abbazia Greca di San Nilo, è stato fondato nel 1004 da un gruppo di monaci greci provenienti dall'Italia meridionale, all'epoca I santi fondatori con la Madre di Diobizantina, guidati da S. Nilo di Rossano. Attualmente l'Abbazia Greca di Grottaferrata è l'ultimo dei numerosi Monasteri Bizantini che nel medioevo erano diffusi in tutta l'Italia meridionale e nella stessa Roma. L'abbazia di notte è chiusa e non vi si può accedere; le foto notturne possono essere scattate normalmente solo in inverno; queste alle 6:30 in una mattinata piovigginosa.
