In England, we value our veteran and ancient trees as much as our old and important buildings and so they are listed and protected by law.

Rightly, you cannot fell them or damage them and they are inspected every ten years or so. Most, generally are left to age and die naturally (unlike most old important buildings!)

Fortunately, I was able to find online this database which shows their location, state of health and last date of inspection - and a photo, usually of poor quality!

This massive beech tree, its entry in the database is the title, possibly 500 years old is one that I already knew of. When I tried to photograph it on Thursday, I found it is impossible to get it all in. The branches soar up so high that even the widest angle cannot them all in and the surrounding trees have their branches obscuring the view.

So, I decided to do a true perpendicular shot, low down - and much closer than it looks. The vertical format helps emphasise the upward thrust and gets leaves quite close to the camera.

The Forest I visited the next day is supposed to have the highest concentration of ancient trees in all of Europe, which is partly why I went! And how I was able to spend most of the day there too...

But where do you go find these oddities? Peculiar.

Thank you Enrico.

Stefano - I find your description of 'odd' and peculiar' slightly insulting. These are truly magnificent living organic beings and in their presence is rather special. And I know that the majority would agree with me. I'm sure that the relevant national species can be found in most countries, as ever, if you look and explore - on foot - and do research and you will be rewarded. But thanks for your 'like' - it is appreciated.

Ezio - I vaguely recall your reference - but I'm not going to watch the whole LONG film tonight to remind myself!!

Good word, Fabrizio!

'Awesome' is a good word also, Clara.

Thanks also Francis, Matthew and Agata - cheers and good Sunday to all..
