Contrariamente a quanto si crede le origini della festa di Halloween non sono da ricercarsi negli stati uniti , infatti mentre il giovane George Washington vagava ancora per la virginia avendo solo in embrione la sua idea di nazione , in europa continuava una tradizione che si protraeva già da oltre un millenio e seguita da varie popolazioni , in particolare quelle del centro nord che alla vigilia del 1° novembre organizzavano la festa più importante dell'anno, il Samhain . Durante questi riti ringraziavano gli dei per il raccolto dell'anno concluso, e invocavano la loro benevolenza per l'anno che stava per iniziare , il Samhain era quindi una celebrazione che serviva alle antiche civiltà, che vivevano di agricoltura , a esorcizzare paure antiche, come il terrore delle calamità naturali, la perdita dei propri cari ,o un cattivo raccolto. Questi antichi rituali aiutavano i popoli del passato a familiarizzare con l'ignoto, l'aldilà, rievocando la paura della morte per combinarla con l'allegria dei vivi. Morti e vivi insieme festeggiavano l'imminente anno nuovo; queste celebrazioni rappresentano l'origine culturale di quella che oggi chiamiamo Halloween. Poi come sempre piu' spesso accade a una ricorrenza con connotazioni iniziali religiose o comunque a profonda spitualità , questa nostra società consumistica e riuscita a trasformarla da festa a stucchevole festino .
