Nella cattredale di Matera l'aula liturgica, luogo di raduno dei fedeli per la preghiera, si articola in tre navate e presenta un controsoffitto ligneo che nasconde le capriate duecentesche. L'opera fu realizzata per volontà dell'Arcivescovo Brancaccio tra il 1703 e il 1722, ed affidata all'artista pugliese Giuseppe Porta. La decorazione del controsoffitto della navata centrale, rifatta a metà dell'800 ad opera del pittore calabrese Giovanni Battista Santoro, riporta nel riquadro centrale la scena della Visitazione di Maria a Sant'Elisabetta; ancora nella navata centrale, ai piedi del presbiterio, è raffigurata la Conversione di Sant'Eustachio, principale patrono della città di Matera, in corrispondenza del portale principale troviamo la Gloria di San Giovanni da Matera, illustre figlio della città dei Sassi.
