Da piccoli roditori, simpatici abitanti dei boschi, dei prati e delle ripe, sono diventate il nemico numero uno dell'ordine, della pulizia e della salute dell'uomo, le arvicole non sono topi, non apportano gli stessi danni alle cose. Per le piccole dimensioni non richiedono grandi quantità di alimenti, non sporcano, non rovinano quello che mangiano, e un arbusto di biancospino può sfamare un esercito di arvicole. Clethirionomys glareolus Le arvicole appartengono all'ordine dei roditori e alla famiglia dei microtidi. Le specie sono otto, suddivise in quattro generi diversi, non facili da distinguere. La più simpatica ed interessante è l'arvicola rossastra, Clethirionomys glareolus, detta anche topo campagnolo dal pelo rosso. Come la maggior parte delle altre specie di arvicole predilige un clima fresco umido, e non la si trova in luoghi caldi, assolati e pietrosi. Il suo habitat ideale sono i boschi, i parchi, gli incolti, i prati e, perché no, i terreni intorno a giardini e frutteti dove può soddisfare la sua proverbiale golosità. E' diffusa in tutto il territorio nazionale ad eccezione delle isole, con particolare riferimento alla fascia altimetrica compresa fra il piano e gli 800 metri, dove è più frequente. Per osservarla Nonostante sia uno dei roditori selvatici più presenti nel nostro paese, resta difficile da osservare per le sue abitudini schive e la grande circospezione con cui si muove. La sua invisibilità è, infatti, l'unica arma di difesa di cui l'arvicola dispone. Per osservarla è necessario, prima, trovarne le tracce che, più che negli escrementi, sono rappresentate da incisioni lisce, piccole e parallele dei denti sulla polpa di frutti e funghi. Un'arvicola rossastra ritorna spesso ai piedi di uno stesso albero da frutto, se questo è isolato e rappresenta un'eccezione all'interno del suo territorio. Non sempre la vediamo a terra ad approfittare della cascola dei frutti, ma ci accorgiamo della sua presenza solo quando udiamo un tramestio fra le foglie. Nonostante le abitudini prevalentemente terrestri, l'arvicola rossa è un'ottima arrampicatrice e, grazie al suo peso ridotto (al massimo 25 grammi per i maschi) può spingersi fino ai brindilli più sottili che reggono i frutti. Siccome potrebbe trattarsi di una lunga attesa, è meglio sistemarsi comodi su una sedia con un buon libro da leggere, non fare rumore, e non battere i piedi per terra: solo così la nostra pazienza potrà essere ricompensata. Per distinguerla dai topolini di campagna Basta osservare le modalità di corsa: il topo campagnolo ha un'andatura saltellante e, anche in fase di fuga, procede lungo linee spezzate difficili da prevedere, l'arvicola corre rapidissima in linea retta da un riparo all'altro, il più possibile vicino al terreno.
