Fusti cilindrici, eretti, striati, di colore verde con sfumature violette ai nodi. Foglie acuminate, larghe fino a 8 mm, guainanti il fusto. Fiori piccoli, riuniti in una spighetta composta da 5-20 elementi. Spighette poco numerose, riunite in una pannocchia a rami semplici, pendenti e tremolanti al vento, larghe 7-12 mm e lunghe 12-25 mm, di forma più o meno ovale, prima di colore verde-argentato con base porporina, poi rosso-ferruginee nel secco. Habitat: cresce nell'intervallo altimetrico tra 0 e 1700 metri s.l.m. Luoghi erbosi e asciutti, macchia, incolti, radure, al margine dei sentieri. Fioritura: Febbraio-Giugno
