Grammichele, cittadina sorta dopo il devastante terremoto che rase al suolo gran parte della Sicilia Orientale (11 Gennaio 1693). Nel progetto di riqualificazione urbanistica della Piazza Carlo Maria Carafa è stato realizzato un grande orologio solare orizzontale, probabilmente uno dei più grandi al mondo, in grado di caratterizzare la piazza attraverso un attento recupero del passato. Gli orologi solari misurano il tempo mediante l'ombra di un'asta opportunamente inclinata chiamata GNOMONE (dal greco "gnomon", che significa "indicatore"). Il principe Carlo Maria Carafa, fondatore della città, appassionato cultore di astronomia, matematica, aveva concepito Grammichele come una città del Sole realizzando nel centro della piazza principale una grande Meridiana a forma di croce. La meridiana, rimossa nei primi decenni dell'800, oggi è sostituita da un'enorme statua monumentale di bronzo di Murat Cura, parte integrante dell'orologio che regge un'asta gnomonica ed occupa il centro della piazza raffigurante un uomo inginocchiato simboleggiante il tempo, avvolto da una serie di cerchi che lo imprigionano nel suo tempo e che richiamano l'antica sfera armillare. L'orologio solare è essenzialmente composto da tre parti: lo gnomone, il quadrante e un insieme di linee che indicano le ore, i solstizi, gli equinozi, lo zodiaco e nel caso specifico riporta le date di distruzione di Occhiolà, l'antico centro prima della costruzione di Grammichele.
