Ahmedabad è la capitale del Gujarat e conta oltre 3.5 milioni di abitanti con una densità di 2.700 persone per km2. A parte il traffico caotico e il senso di disordine generale, si tratta di una città con le tipiche contraddizioni dell'Asia: quartieri ricchi attorniati da enormi “bidonville” che in India vengono chiamate: “Slum”. Come tutte le baraccopoli, in genere dispongono di servizi sociali ben al di sotto dello standard di benessere: mancanza di fognature, smaltimento delle acque di scarico, energia elettrica, servizi di pubblica sicurezza e assistenza. La criminalità è un'altra caratteristica di queste aree. Con le dovute precauzioni e grazie alla guida indiana è stato possibile entrare e fotografare senza grandi problemi di giorno. In genere l'accoglienza ad un occidentale è grandiosa, a volte c'è la gara per farsi fotografare e i bambini non ti mollano un secondo! Isolare quindi un soggetto risulta tutt'altro che facile..
