Iphiclides podalirius - Nome comune: Podalirio Il podalirio è inconfondibile, grazie alla forma delle ali, alla livrea e all'elegante volo leggero e planato. Questa specie è abbastanza comune in Italia e si può incontrare anche nei parchi cittadini intenta a suggere nettare dalle piante ornamentali come il lillà e il glicine. Le piante nutrici sono soprattutto alberi da frutto spontanei e coltivati (pero, melo, susino) che non contengono tossine. Al contrario della polissena e del macaone, questa specie è quindi appetibile per molti predatori, soprattutto uccelli. Le lunghe code alari in prossimità di vistose macchie rosse e blu sembrano però rappresentare una difesa dai loro attacchi. Nonostante la loro funzione non sia stata ancora completamente chiarita, sembra proprio che esse possano servire a ingannare i predatori. La macchia creerebbe una finta testa e le code delle false antenne. Questo aspetto bifronte disorienta il predatore nella fase di cattura (disegno sotto). La parte di ala colpita rimane in bocca al predatore, ma la farfalla vola via. In effetti, a parziale conferma di questa ipotesi, è difficile trovare esemplari di podalirio con le code integre.
