Le noci della Palma di Betel contengono molti tannini tra cui uno di un intenso colore rosso. Vengono tagliate a fette sottili ed avvolte in foglie di pepe di betel spolverate di calce ed unite ad un mix di numerose spezie tra cui cannella, noce moscata, cardamomo ecc.. Il boccone ottenuto si chiama semplicemente betel e viene masticato prevalentemente dopo i pasti per profumare l'alito ed aiutare la digestione. All' inizio la masticazione, visto il volume e la consistenza risulta piuttosto faticosa e richiede un grande impegno ma chi lo consuma sembra non poterne fare a meno. Io quando ci ho provato ne sono rimasto disgustato e non sono riuscito a tenerlo in bocca lungo.. La masticazione del betel provoca un abbondante salivazione che si colora di rosso e le cui tracce indelebili tapezzano le strad. E' ( o forse era perchè ultimamente mi è capitato di vederelo con meno frequenza ) così diffuso che, per evitare danni, hanno dovuto vietarne il consumo all' interno ed inprossimità di templi e monumenti. Le noci di betel presentano, tuttavia, l'inconveniente di annerire i denti e tingere la saliva di rosso, come conseguenza dei tannini contenuti in abbondanza.
