L'addome del maschio maturo di Libellula fulva è di un colore azzurro pruinoso, mentre quello della femmina è color rosso-marrone con una banda dorsale di triangoli neri. La femmine è facile da identificare, per la presenza di macchie scure sulle punte di tutte le ali. I maschi di Libellula fulva invece assomigliano molto Orthetrum cancellatum (Linnaeus, 1758). Il carattere più ovvio per distinguere queste specie è la colorazione della base delle ali posteriori: in L. fulva si nota un triangolo nero, mentre in O. cancellatum l'ala è completamente ialina, anche alla base. Le larve di L. fulva si trovano in ambienti particolari; sia nei tratti inferiori dei fiumi dove l'acqua scorre lentamente, sia nei laghi o laghetti con un minimo di corrente (imposto dalla falda che si muove o dalla immissione di acque correnti). Questi habitat si trovano quasi sempre affiancati dai boschi, l'ambiente usato dagli individui neosfarfallati per la maturazione. L. fulva vola da metà aprile fino a fine agosto, con il maggior numero dei individui presenti tra metà maggio e i primi di luglio. L. fulva è una specie europea con i limiti della sua distribuzione nel sud di Inghilterra, Svezia e Mar Caspio. In Italia la specie è localizzata ma è stata segnalata dal maggior parte delle regioni.
