Ho scattato questa foto, perché il signore che indossa con tanta eleganza un capo difficile come un cappotto bianco, mi ha riportata indietro nel tempo, a tanti anni fa, ad una lunga intervista con Paolo Stoppa, in cui mi parlò del “famoso cappotto bianco” di Dario Niccodemi, uno dei più grandi autori del teatro borghese dei primi del '900. “Niccodemi, - mi diceva Stoppa, “pur essendo livornese, aveva passato un lungo periodo a Buenos Aires, per poi stabilirsi quasi in pianta stabile a Parigi, al seguito di Réjane, interprete di molte sue commedie, e della capitale francese aveva assorbito gli usi, i costumi e quello snobbismo tipicamente d'oltrealpe, che faceva di lui, un uomo squisitamente elegante e raffinato. In previsione di un nuovo spettacolo, Niccodemi, - continuava Paolo Stoppa “arrivava in galleria ai tavoli del Savini, mai prima delle undici. Lo si riconosceva da lontano, proprio per via del suo lungo pastrano bianco e il cappello rigorosamente in tinta. Riccardo Bacchelli, puntualmente, mi diceva, eccolo che arriva direttamente da Paris, il grande Niccodemi. E grande lo era davvero. Tutti i più grandi attori sono passati dalla sua Compagnia e hanno interpretato le sue commedie, da Vittorio Gassman, a Enrico Maria Salerno, alla Magnani, etc. Niccodemi è stato anche direttore teatrale, e in questa funzione fu aperto alle innovazioni della scena italiana. Alla sua compagnia, che grazie alla sua regia si pose tra le migliori attive negli anni Venti in Italia, si deve tra l'altro la prima storica rappresentazione di "Sei personaggi in cerca d'autore" di Pirandello, il 10 maggio 1921, al teatro Valle (Roma)." E, dunque, - concludeva Stoppa, " ad un uomo del genere, si poteva anche perdonare la vanità di un cappotto bianco”. E questo signore, il 27 dicembre, mi ha dato l'occasione di tornare un po' indietro nel tempo, e ricordare un attore che ho molto stimato, e intervistato più volte, il grande Paolo Stoppa, il burbero benefico del teatro italiano, come lo avevano soprannominato i teatranti dell'epoca, da quando in compagnia con la Rina Morelli, aveva interpretato la famosa commedia di Carlo Goldoni, appunto il “Burbero benefico”.
