In tutto il mondo cristiano, durante il periodo natalizio, esiste l'usanza di erigere presepi nelle case e nelle chiese. Nella capanna vediamo la Sacra Famiglia e i pastori, sullo sfondo l'asino e il bue. L'adorazione dei tre re Magi Gli apostoli evangelisti Luca e Matteo furono i primi a descrivere la storia dell'incarnazione di Cristo. Già nel Quarto secolo troviamo nelle catacombi di Roma, immagini della natività. La storia ci dice che già in epoca Paleocristiana, il giorno di Natale nelle chiese venivano esposte immagini religiose. Comunemente il "padre del presepio" viene considerato San Francesco d'Assisi , poiché a Natale del 1223 fece il primo presepio in un bosco. Allora, Papa Onorio III, gli permise di uscire dal convento di Greccio, così egli eresse una mangiatoia all'interno di una caverna in un bosco, vi portò un asino ed un bue viventi, ma senza la Sacra Famiglia. Poi tenne la sua famosa predica di Natale davanti ad una grande folla di persone. Nella chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore a Roma, si può ammirare uno dei più antichi presepi natalizi. Fu realizzato in alabastro nel 1289 da Arnolfo da Cambio e donato a questa chiesa. Il presepio ha la forma di una casetta, in cui è rappresentata l'adorazione dei Re Magi. Un periodo fiorente di presepi fu il Barocco. Prime notizie certe di presepi di chiese si rilevano dalla Germania meridionale quando, dopo la Riforma i Gesuiti riconobbero per primi il grande valore del presepio come oggetto di preghiera e di raccoglimento, nonché mezzo di informazione religiosa. I Gesuiti fecero costruire preziosi e fastosi presepi, tanto che quest'usanza si estese velocemente nelle chiese di tutta l' Europa cattolica, finché ogni comune volle un presepio in ogni chiesa. Baluardi delle costruzioni dei presepi in Europa divennero l'Italia, la Spagna, il Portogallo e il Sud della Francia. Nell'Europa dell'Est la Polonia, la Repubblica Ceca e la Slovacchia, in centro Europa soprattutto l'Austria ed il Sud della Germania. e di più l'interesse del mondo rurale per il presepe. A cavallo degli ultimi due secoli, il presepio perse un po' di interesse, per tornare in auge ai giorni nostri, dove sta conoscendo un vero e proprio revival.
