Tra le “Montagne della Luna”, nel sud dell'Etiopia, appartata sulle alture a ovest del corso inferiore del fiume Omo, vive la tribù dei Surma, una delle etnie meno conosciute e tra le più interessanti dell'intera Africa. Nella terra dei Surma (o Suri, come spesso si chiamano tra di loro), si spinse anche l'esploratore Bottego, nell'estate del 1896, entrando in contatto con queste popolazioni primitive che hanno conservato sino ad oggi intatti, in maniera straordinaria, le proprie tradizioni e il loro stile di vita. Questo grazie al totale isolamento geografico in cui hanno sempre vissuto (sino a pochi anni fa non vi erano neppure piste sterrate sicure) ed all'ostilità tradizionalmente intrattenuta con le tribù limitrofe. Giunti in Etiopia dalle pianure sudanesi, i Surma, pastori, agricoltori e spesso temuti razziatori di bestiame, si sono insediati su queste colline, lontano da strade o piste segnate sulle mappe, ed i loro villaggi sono per la maggior parte raggiungibili solamente a piedi. La necessità di sopravvivere in un territorio così aspro, dove la ricerca di pascoli per il bestiame è essenziale per la vita stessa dell'intera comunità, ha comportato che queste piccole tribù siano rimaste intimamente legate alla propria identità di clan, impedendo fusioni culturali con le vicine etnie dei Nyangatom (o Bume), e dei Mursi, quest'ultimi stanziati nella Bassa Valle dell'Omo. Alti e snelli, con caratteri tipici dei popoli nilotici, i Surma presentano molte similitudini con i Nuba del vicino Sudan. Insieme ad i Mursi, fanno parte dello sparuto gruppo di etnie in cui le donne sposate portano, inserito nel labbro inferiore o superiore, precedentemente forato, il piattello labiale di terracotta, spesso di dimensioni impressionanti, tondo presso i Mursi, trapezoidale o tondo presso i Surma. Gli uomini sono completamente nudi o portano una coperta o un tessuto colorato annodato su una spalla a mo' di tunica. Sino a qualche anno fa i Surma, come i Mursi, non indossavano alcun vestito: il governo etiope ha imposto loro di coprire il corpo nudo e, anche se a malincuore, hanno acconsentito, vestendosi con stoffe o coperte nei colori viola o rosso che lasciano scoperta una parte del torace. Amano dipingersi il corpo, che per loro è una vera e propria arte, con maestria e raffinatezza invidiabili, utilizzando l'argilla che spalmano reciprocamente sui corpi realizzando disegni geometrici, righe e motivi decorativi tra i più fantasiosi. #Sguardi #BiancoeNero #BlackandWhite #Eyes
