Papilio machaon Nome comune: Macaone Il macaone è una delle farfalle europee più variopinte e il disegno delle sue ali la rende inconfondibile. È molto diffusa e comune in Europa meridionale. L'Arcipelago Toscano non fa eccezione e, nelle isole in cui è presente (Elba, Giglio, Capraia, Pianosa e Gorgona), non è difficile avvistarla anche perché raramente passa inosservata. Le larve si nutrono di svariate ombrellifere tra le quali prediligono il finocchio e la carota selvatici. Da queste piante i bruchi traggono le sostanze chimiche che li rendono sgradevoli ai predatori anche dopo la metamorfosi.
