STORIA - Quando, nel 1979, il Papa Giovanni Paolo II la eleva al rango di "Basilica Romana Minore", la chiesa di Santa Maria di Caravaggio in Milano ha quasi settant'anni di vita. Ben più antica, però, è la devozione degli abitanti del popolare quartiere Ticinese alla Madonna di Caravaggio. Per venire incontro alle necessità spirituali della popolazione di questo rione all'estremo limite di Milano, nel 1902, veniva edificata, tra i prati e gli orti da cui era allora composta questa zona, una piccola chiesetta di legno e, l'8 settembre di quello stesso anno, vi fu portato il simulacro della Vergine. La costruzione si rivelò ben presto insufficiente a contenere l'afflusso dei fedeli e, inoltre, le strutture lignee, costruite nella massima economia, mostrarono ben presto segni di deperimento. Nel cuore del parroco della chiesa di San Gottardo, da cui dipendeva il piccolo santuario, don Giuseppe Cappelletti, cominciò a maturare la volontà di una costruzione in muratura e di proporzioni adeguate. Il 24 giugno 1906, l'Arcivescovo di Milano, cardinale Andrea Ferrari, dà l'avvio ai lavori con la posa della prima pietra. Col tempo, difficoltà soprattutto finanziarie causano un rallentamento nel progredire dell'opera. Ma un avvenimento imprevisto interviene a mutare questa situazione di ristagno. Il 20 luglio 1909 un fulmine colpisce l'angolo frontale sinistro dell'edificio in costruzione e raggiunge l'antistante vecchia chiesetta, scatenandovi un violento incendio. Si riescono a salvare solo il tabernacolo, un quadro di bronzo e le statue della Beata Vergine e di Giannetta, che sono ricoverate in una vicina osteria. Interpretando l'evento quasi come una sollecitazione da parte del Cielo, vengono accelerati i lavori e, il 30 ottobre 1909, viene benedetto il nuovo edificio, sebbene non ancora ultimato. cardinal FerrariLa chiesa è completata in breve tempo: il 1° maggio 1911, il cardinal Ferrari ne compie la solenne dedicazione. Dalla domenica 2 ottobre 1927, essendo sempre più aumentata la popolazione, il santuario dedicato alla Madonna di Caravaggio diviene parrocchia la cui cura è affidata al delegato arcivescovile don Paolo Dubini, che ne aveva seguito la costruzione sin dalle fondamenta. Del 1930 è la torre campanaria, eretta su progetto dell'architetto Ugo Zanchetta. Negli anni a seguire, i parroci succedutesi, provvedono ad arricchire il tempio con opere d'arte. Nel 1938 si inaugura il nuovo coro ed il grande organo realizzato dalla "Pontificia e Reale Fabbrica d'Organi Balbiani - Vegezzi Bossi". Purtroppo, una bomba, caduta il 14 agosto del 1943, durante un tremendo bombardamento sulla città di Milano, distrusse l'abside con l'affresco del Cisterna, rappresentante l'incoronazione e la gloria di Maria e il transetto, che costituivano la parte più artistica del santuario. Terminata la guerra, ponendo mano alla ricostruzione, si decise di dare compimento alla sistemazione dell'altare maggiore e della cripta in cui è custodita la statua della Madonna. L'8 maggio 1955, l'arcivescovo Giovanni Battista Montini, pone sul capo dell'effigie della Vergine un prezioso diadema, coronando così l'opera di ricostruzione.
