Santa Agnese in Agone è l'edificio di maggior spicco di piazza Navona, esistente fin dal secolo VIII fu eretta per il culto a Santa Agnese direttamente dove la tradizione riporta che la santa bambina venne esposta nuda alla gogna ed avvenne il prodigioso accrescimento dei suoi capelli che ne ricoprirono le nudità. L'aspetto attuale, è dovuto a Papa Innocenzo X Pamphili che incaricò di ristrutturare tutta la piazza, sede dell'antico circo di Domiziano, a Carlo e Girolamo Rainaldi. Ai Rainaldi quindi fu affidato l'incarico di ricostruire la chiesa in luogo dell'antica cappella di S. Agnese ma le lentezze e le incertezze degli architetti spinsero Papa Innocenzo X, ad affidarne nel 1653 la realizzazione al Borromini. Il Borromini non potè cambiare il progetto a croce greca ma modificò la facciata, rendendola concava, in tre parti di cui la centrale aggettante ed inserì nel progetto due agili campaniletti ai fianchi, ottenendo quindi l'effetto di far risaltare maggiormente la cupola. Dopo la morte di Papa Innocenzo X gli eredi Pamphili rimossero dall'incarico Borromini restituendo a Carlo Rainaldi il lavoro che terminò nel 1672 sotto la supervisione di una commissione di architetti. L'interno di Santa Agnese in Agone restituisce l'impressione di una maggiore vastità a causa della luce diffusa dalle finestre della cupola, la decorazione è ricca di stucchi dorati e marmi pregiati, per l'altare, Borromini impiegò colonne di verde antico provenienti da S. Giovanni in Laterano. La pala marmorea dell'altare maggiore è opera di Domenico Guidi e, venne esposta ufficialmente il 13 luglio 1688. Il grande rilievo in marmo bianco rappresenta la Sacra Famiglia con Santa Elisabetta, San Giovanni e Zaccaria. La cupola fu affrescata da Ciro Ferri nel 1668, i pennacchi dal Baciccia nel 1665 e sugli altari tutti i lavori furono eseguiti dai principali allievi del Bernini.
