New Forest Mare and Foal sent on June 16, 2016 (13:48) by Timk2. 38 comments, 2234 views. [retina]

at 350mm, 1/1250 f/9.0, ISO 800, hand held. New Forest National Park, United Kingdom.

Much more difficult to shoot than you might think, I had been watching and shooting a group of these semi wild native ponies out on the open heath of the western fringe of the New Forest, at the last throws of late sunshine. Shot from a distance (especially needed with young) it is actually really difficult to get a nice composition and pairing in the same frame, with such a long lens (equivalent to 600mm on 35mm) - and even better was the sympathetic background. Due to Juza rules, I am forced to post under 'Pets', which they are definitely not.

Thank you Ann, yes, wild animals go where the food is, not where they'll look pretty in photos...And I was standing next to a bog, which I accidentally trod in (up to my calf) as whilst I was watching my subjects I was so distracted I had completely forgotten where I was.

Oops! That must have been a bit tricky to deal with!

I didn't quite say it like that Ann... but it's the nature of the true Forest, even in 'dry' June! I got the barn owl on the way back, about an hour later.
