Il museo, celebre per i numerosi capolavori dell'impressionismo e del post-impressionismo esposti al suo interno, è situato di fronte al Musée du Louvre, in una ex-stazione ferroviaria (la Gare d'Orsay), costruita in stile eclettico alla fine dell'Ottocento. Espone opere d'arte create tra il 1848 e il 1914 e le sue collezioni comprendono pitture, sculture, oggetti d'arti decorative, fotografie, medaglie, disegni e stampe.
