L' attuale Corte d'onore della Reggia di Venaria è frutto dei radicali cambiamenti architettonici attuati daMichelangelo Garove e poi da Benedetto Alfieri , che mutarono l'impostazione della dimora progettatanel 1659 da Castellamonte.L'area compresa tra la Torre dell'orologio e la Reggia di Diana, era in origine occupata da due cortili, collegati in sequenza. Il primo, denominato Castelvecchio, era chiuso a Sud dalla Cappella di San Rocco e sugli altri lati da un porticato, con logge ai piani superiori. Una torre, munita d'orologio, lo collegava al "Gran Cortile", inquadrato dalla facciata della Reggia di Diana. Qui sorgeva la Fontana del Cervo, con 12 cani e 4 cacciatori marmorei, opera di Falconi, sorpresi nell'atto di finire un cervo in bronzo, opera di Boucheron. L'accesso alla Reggia era mediato da una scalinata ai cui lati erano poste coppie scultoree di schiavi mori. Il lato Sud della corte era chiuso da scuderie, mentre a Nord balaustre adorne di statue s'affacciavano sul giardino basso. L'insieme venne disarticolato a cominciare dal 1700: scuderie e Cappella di San Rocco lasciarono spazio alla Galleria Grande ed ai suoi padiglioni. Furono smantellati inoltre la Fontana del Cervo e le sculture degli "schiavi". Nel 1739 scomparve la separazione fra i due cortili per dilatare gli spazi nelle presenti linee. La Fontana del Cervo rivive oggi come citazione dell'antica fontana seicentesca di cui rimangono le fondamenta e parte delle decorazioni: è stata inserita in una nuova grandiosa elisse di 120 metri che recupera il baricentro della Corte d'onore della Reggia.Il Teatro d'acqua, con i suoi 288 tra augelli d'acqua (alti anche 10 metri), proiettori colorati e condotti di vapore, costituisce una delle più scenografiche e suggestive fontane del mondo. ps. scatto eseguito dal secondo piano della reggia e peccato che non ci fosse una sola nube in cielo!
