All'interno del complesso della Reggia di Venaria Reale sorge la chiesa di Sant'Uberto, santo vissuto nel medioevo e protettore dei cacciatori. Tale dedicazione richiama la destinazione venatoria della residenza. La chiesa è edificata, tra il 1716 e il 1729, per volere di Vittorio Amedeo II di Savoia (1666-1732), su progetto dell'architetto messinese Filippo Juvarra (1678-1736). La committenza regia chiede al progettista una grande cappella annessa al palazzo ma allo stesso tempo aperta sulla piazza della città. La scelta di Juvarra di arretrare la facciata in mattoni a vista, rispetto al filo di fabbricazione della Grande Galleria, gli consente di ottenere uno spiazzo antistante, piccolo ma adeguato, che assume la funzione di sagrato. La chiesa a pianta centrale con un nucleo di forma ottagonale, accoglie al suo interno un grande altare maggiore, due altari ai lati del transetto e quattro cappelle laterali collocate sulle diagonali, di forma circolare all'interno e poligonale all'esterno. Trovandosi quasi protetta dalla corte dei palazzi, non fu possibile realizzare nella chiesa una vera e propria cupola, ottenuta invece con un espediente artistico particolarmente scenografico che ne simula la presenza: un trompe l'oeil affrescato al di sopra del tamburo, opera del pittore Giovanni Antonio Galliari (1714-1783). La trabeazione è sorretta da alte lesene con capitelli corinzi. L'apparato scultoreo realizzato tra il 1724 e il 1729, opera di Giovanni Baratta (1670-1747) e del nipote Giovanni Antonio Cybei (1706-1784), contempla il grande e composito altare maggiore, con angeli in volo che sorreggono un ciborio a forma di tempietto, e le quattro statue dei dottori della chiesa: sant'Agostino, sant'Ambrogio, sant'Atanasio e san Giovanni Crisostomo. L'apparato pittorico, tutto imperniato sulla figura della Vergine Maria e dei santi ad essa legati, si palesa nelle tele collocate sugli altari laterali e nelle cappelle, realizzate da Francesco Trevisani, Sebastiano Ricci e Sebastiano Conca. Nella cappella posta a sinistra dell'ingresso si trova il fonte battesimale. I collegamenti della chiesa con la Reggia vengono portati a termine, sotto Carlo Emanuele III (1701-1773), da Benedetto Alfieri (1699-1767) che realizza, intorno alla metà del Settecento, il bellissimo scalone monumentale per l'accesso alle tribune e la galleria di collegamento con la Citroniera. La chiesa fu oggetto di una prima importante risistemazione nel 1961 in occasione dell'Expo, ma i recenti interventi legati al complesso restauro che hanno riguardato la Reggia di Venaria nella sua totalità, hanno restituito una regia cappella, dove architettura, scultura e pittura hanno ritrovato lo splendore ideato dal progettista. L'inaugurazione dei restauri fu festeggiata il 3 settembre 2006 con un concerto del Festival torinese settembre musica.
