Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Huli are an indigenous Melanesian ethnic group who live mainly in the highlands of Hela Province in Papua New Guinea. They are one of the largest cultural groups in the country, with a population of over 250,000 people. The Huli traditionally practice horticulture, with sweet potatoes as their main food, and pigs play an important role in social and ceremonial life. Huli society is organized around clans, land ownership, and strong social rules that guide marriage, alliances, and community life. The Huli are widely known for their distinctive body decoration and ceremonial attire, especially the famous Huli wigmen. Their traditional headdress is a wig made from their own hair and is a powerful symbol of identity and adulthood. From about the age of eight to fifteen, boys leave their mothers and live with their fathers or other male relatives, where they learn male roles, traditions, and responsibilities. Throughout these formative years, the boys allow their hair to grow long. The hair is carefully shaped and maintained using plant fibers and natural materials, gradually forming the rounded structure needed for the final wig. When the hair has reached the desired length and shape, it is cut close to the scalp. A specialist known as a wig master then crafts the hair into a ceremonial wig, sometimes adding feathers, leaves, shells, or other decorative elements. Wigs must be completed before marriage, and once the process is finished the boy is recognized as an adult member of the community. The wig can be worn during ceremonies, dances, and important social events, often combined with brightly painted faces using yellow, red, and white pigments derived from natural sources. These colors and patterns are symbolic and can represent strength, fertility, or connections to ancestral spirits. Today, while many Huli people participate in modern economic and political life, traditional practices such as wig making, ceremonial dress, and ritual performances remain an important part of cultural identity. The Huli wigmen continue to embody a strong link between past and present, preserving ancestral knowledge while adapting to the changes of contemporary Papua New Guinea.
