Available on my website: https://robertopazziphoto.com The Nyangatom people are a pastoralist ethnic group primarily residing in the Omo Valley in Ethiopia, near the border with South Sudan and Kenya. They speak an Eastern Nilotic language, which is a branch of the Nilo Saharan language family, and their way of life is deeply connected to the rhythms of the natural environment. Traditionally, the Nyangatom are nomadic pastoralists, relying on cattle herding and seasonal migration to find suitable grazing lands for their livestock, which are not only a source of food but also a symbol of wealth and social importance. Their society is organized around age sets, where individuals of the same age form a distinct group that progresses through life stages together, creating strong bonds and a clear social structure. Leadership and responsibilities are often tied to these groups, helping maintain order and continuity within the community. The Nyangatom are also known for their distinctive cultural practices, including ritual scarification and body decorations. These cultural markers often reflect social status and identity, serving as visible expressions of belonging and personal history. Among Nyangatom women, heavy beaded necklaces are an important symbol of identity and beauty. A girl traditionally receives her first necklace from her father during childhood, and new strands are added throughout her life. In some cases, the accumulated necklaces can weigh several kilograms, reaching up to about 5 kg. The Nyangatom have maintained a resilient culture that adapts to change while preserving important traditions. Ceremonies, storytelling, and communal activities continue to play a vital role in their daily lives, reinforcing shared values and a strong sense of identity.
