They have a long and rich history and are known for their developed traditions of trade, agriculture, and craftsmanship. Unlike many other ethnic minorities in the region, the Bai built well-organized towns and participated actively in regional commerce. Today they are one of the 56 ethnic groups officially recognized by China, with a population of about two million people. Bai towns are famous for elegant white houses with grey roofs and decorated gates, reflecting both aesthetic refinement and practical design. One of the most distinctive artistic traditions of the Bai people is their batik, a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique that creates striking blue-and-white textiles. This craft has been practiced for generations and is often passed down within families. In many villages, women traditionally learn the technique from their mothers and grandmothers. The process begins with white cotton cloth. Artisans draw patterns on the fabric using melted beeswax, which protects certain areas from dye. The cloth is then immersed in a bath of natural indigo, giving it a deep blue color. When the wax is removed, the undyed areas appear as white designs against the blue background. Bai batik patterns are often inspired by nature and daily life, including flowers, birds, butterflies, fish, and geometric motifs. Some designs carry symbolic meanings such as good fortune or prosperity. Traditionally, batik textiles were used for clothing, headscarves, aprons, baby carriers, and household decorations. They also played a role in festivals and important family events. Today, Bai batik remains an important symbol of cultural identity. Artisans continue to produce traditional textiles while also adapting the craft to modern tastes.
